Richard D. Skaggs is a vice president and senior equity strategist at Loomis, Sayles & Company. As a member of the macro strategies group, he works closely with the firm’s investment teams to provide a proprietary framework based on global macro issues and his assessment of the overall capital markets. Utilizing a variety of analytical approaches, Richard provides viewpoints on stock market fundamentals, valuation, investor sentiment and other topical issues affecting the behavior of equity markets. Richard publishes weekly equity updates and a quarterly global equity market review which delves into the current equity market environment and dissects the market sector by sector.

The burning question for equity investors is: what will happen to earnings in 2017?

We estimate that aggregate operating S&P 500 earnings will grow in 2017 at a mid-single digit clip, if not better. This takes into account our constructive economic forecast and expectation that commodity sector earnings will show some improvement. We fully expect that 2017 will be the first year of meaningful operating EPS growth since 2014.

What do rate hikes portend for the equity markets?  Let’s do the numbers.

We examined the past eight Fed rate hike cycles since 1972 to see how stocks performed as rate hikes were implemented. Based on history, it appears equity investors have little to fear in the early stages of rate increases. As a result, a rate hike would not present a material obstacle to our ongoing constructive view of equity prospects over the next 12-18 months.
